15 Bangkok Lane in Pulau Tikus, Penang, Malaysia is one of 41 heritage homes built in 1928 by Cheah Leong Keah. Born in Swatow, China, he travelled to Hong Kong then to Penang and began by making and repairing horse carriages, then later evolved into one of the pioneers of the motor industry. A quiet philanthropist, CLK was a forward-thinking visionary who left a legacy to be fulfilled.

Stay
15 Bangkok Lane
We welcome artists and musicians who'd like a chance to experience living in a
heritage cottage at Le Coq @15 BANGKOK LANE HOME STAY. We don't run it like a business, rather like a sharing experience. So, if you're thinking of spending a few days in Penang
just like a local, let us know! And if I'm in town, I'd love to show you around. Do note though, if you're expecting a hotel, this is honestly not it.
You might like to consider the various boutique hotels in Georgetown.
Stained glass and Scottish-made floor tiles are a main feature in the house
** What to expect
The house is
furnished with modern day comforts, yet still retains as much of the
original feel. In the hall is a 1960s art deco vinyl sofa from my
grandfather's house.
Art-deco vinyl sofa which I’m looking to be up-cycled so please let me know if you know someone to recommend.
Upstairs, the loft master bedroom is
air-conditioned (brand new) with one king-sized real bed (sleeps 2),
writing table & chair. There's a private balcony so you can enjoy lazy mornings and the tropical
weather. Newly installed blinds will keep it shady enough for the
tropical afternoons.
Breakfast on the balcony
The Master Bedroom is air-conditioned and has the comfort of a King-sized bed and 600-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets. Table-fan in the second
open-concept room with one single bed (sleeps 1) opens up to a private
balcony that amazes with stunning views of the temple steeple.

There
is only one shower area and toilet downstairs. We've fitted in a brand
new Johnson Suisse seated flush toilet - a tiny peak-hole allows you
sneak peak to the sky while on the throne :P But the bathroom is yet to
be renovated so it's still dated with faded blue ties, but it's clean
otherwise! A brand new heated powerful shower makes up for it for now.
Spacious bathroom retains blue tiles from the 1980s
A brand-new throne!
The
retro living room is the 'unofficial' arts space, where we'll
occasionally invite local artists to jam and gig at our open mic
sessions. We also have housed musicians in-residence at 15 Bangkok Lane.
The house welcomes singer songwriters and poets for its bi-monthly
gigs. Help yourself to use of the mini fridge, utensils & mini kettle.
I shuttle between Kuala Lumpur and Penang for work. When I'm in town, I'd love to show you around!
If you're a musician, artist or poet and would like to experience sleeping in a shop house, contact us. The home space welcomes non-artistes as well, where we charge a nominal fee to cover for cleaning and to support our arts programmes.
